Sustainability at Camping Jungfrau – our renewed award with the leading Swiss sustainability label "ibex fairstay"

This guide features child-friendly trips around Lauterbrunnen. The focus is on close-to-nature experiences, cable car adventures and alpine playgrounds - perfect for a family holiday at and around one of Switzerland’s most beautiful campsites.

The first day starts off relaxed, right at Camping Jungfrau – but is still full of sights:

• Morning: Kids can let off some steam on the campsite’s own playground, surrounded by the spectacular backdrop of the Staubbach waterfall, which plunges almost 300 metres. A natural spectacle to fire the imagination.

• Lunch/Afternoon: For children aged around 5 and up, a visit to the Trümmelbach falls is a true highlight. A tunnel lift takes you right inside the mountain, where powerful glacial waterfalls thunder through narrow rock gorges – loud, cool, and impressive! Narrow paths, railings and platforms make the natural wonder safely accessible. An adventure for little explorers that leaves a lasting impression.

• Lunch/Afternoon: Families with younger children might choose a lovely walk along the valley path towards Stechelberg. The trail is flat, buggy-friendly and passes cow pastures, streams and rustic wooden barns. There are plenty of picnic and barbecue spots along the way – with views of several waterfalls.

After your walk or visit to the Trümmelbach falls, the bus will comfortably take the whole family back – best to Schützenbach stop, directly opposite the campsite. Cross the Weisse Lütschine river and you’ll be back at your pitch or rental accommodation.

Day 1: Waterfall Wonderland Right on Your Doorstep

Today takes you high above it all – to a world without cars, filled with fresh mountain air and epic views:

Even the ride on the world’s steepest cable car from Stechelberg is an experience for kids: gaze deep into the Lauterbrunnen valley and up vertical rock faces. At the top, you’ll reach Mürren, a charming, traffic-free mountain village lined with traditional wooden chalets.

From Mürren, the funicular takes you up to Allmendhubel. Here, you’ll find the imaginative Alpenspielplatz Flower Park, where children can climb, balance, slide down flower chutes and crawl through edelweiss tunnels – all set in colourful mountain meadows overlooking the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Picnic spots and a terrace with deckchairs make it a pleasant place for parents too.

If you like, take the scenic family-friendly hiking trail from Mürren to Grütschalp with stunning views. A cable car then brings everyone back down to the valley. Alternatively: simply take train and bus back to Lauterbrunnen.

Day 2: Playtime and Panoramas in Mürren & Allmendhubel

A day trip to Interlaken brings a change of scenery from the mountains – blending town atmosphere with mountaintop delight.

The scenic train ride from Lauterbrunnen to Interlaken follows the Weisse Lütschine river. Next, take the funicular up Harder Kulm. The ride takes just a few minutes, and at the top, jaw-dropping views open out over Lake Brienz and Lake Thun, the whole Jungfrau range and way down into the valley. The “Two-Lakes Footbridge” with its glass platform is an exhilarating spot for kids too!

Just above the panoramic restaurant you’ll find a lovely panorama playground at 1,300 m above sea level, where kids can run wild: slides, climbing tower, swings – all with an alpine view.

After riding down again, you might have time to explore more of Interlaken. In Höhematte Park, children can run about, play, and watch paragliders landing.

Animal lovers can visit the small Alpine Wildlife Park by the Harderbahn valley station – home to marmots, deer and ibex. The Alpine Wildlife Park is open daily. Admission is free, but donations are always welcome.

A dream day for walkers and animal fans.
Take the train from Lauterbrunnen to Wengen, a charming village with a nostalgic flair. From there, the gondola takes you up to Männlichen – high above Lauterbrunnen valley.

The Lieselotte trail is an adventure path themed around the beloved picture-book cow. Children can solve puzzles, stop for photo spots, test their balance, explore hen houses and more – all explained in a child-friendly way and designed to encourage activity.

Recommended for children aged 3 and up. Not suitable for buggies. There is a restaurant at the trail start, plus two picnic sites with firepits (wood provided) along the route.

Right at the Männlichen mountain station is the spacious Alpine playground, with climbing frames, water play and a mini farmyard setup. Plus, there’s an impressive wooden cow 8.5 metres tall and 13 metres long! Parents can see the entire playground from the mountain restaurant terrace.

The journey back to Lauterbrunnen is by gondola and mountain rail again.

The final day is extra exciting – or wonderfully relaxing. First, catch the PostBus to Isenfluh, a remote mountain village. From there, float up on a small, nostalgic cable car to Sulwald. The nostalgic cable car to Sulwald has been running since 1975 and fits eight people – or one cow. They say the view of the triple peaks is at its best here.

For children aged around 10 upwards (depending on riding ability) and adults, the real highlight awaits: ride the Monster Scooter, a giant kick scooter with chunky tyres, down the winding mountain road back to Isenfluh. Helmets are provided. It’s fast but easy to control – loads of fun!

If you prefer to take it easy, relax with a drink on the viewing terrace in Sulwald and ride the cable car back down to the valley.

Day 5: Sulwald & Monster Scooter Adventure

The area around Lauterbrunnen is brilliantly connected by public transport – you can reach many day trip destinations comfortably and stress-free without a car:

• Lauterbrunnen station is just a 10-minute walk from Camping Jungfrau.

• PostBus and local bus routes take you directly to highlights like Trümmelbach falls, Stechelberg or Isenfluh.

• Many cable cars and mountain railways also start nearby, making the journey itself an adventure.

• Sturdy, non-slip shoes are a must for hiking trails and alpine playgrounds. Ordinary trainers often aren’t enough. Lightweight walking boots add stability and safety.

• It can feel chilly up high, even in summer. It’s best to pack layers you can add or remove as needed.

• Other useful items for the day: suncream, water bottle and possibly a rain jacket.

• A daily weather check should be part of your morning routine – especially before heading to higher elevations. The MeteoSwiss app provides local forecasts and severe weather alerts.
